Canoes, Camps & Cannons

By Jennifer Vlieger
Price $9.95

The last bits of the fog drifted around their feet.

Josh and Elliot found themselves standing on a beach surrounded by three enormous canoes.  There were large pieces of material draped across the tops of the canoes that stretched over the sides and were held down to the ground with rocks.

It looked as though the men had turned their canoes into tents and were sleeping underneath the makeshift tents. Off to the one side there was a small fire pit with some cooking pots strewn about.

Two men in strange red hats that looked a lot like socks stuck on their heads, wearing billowy white shirts, blue pants and long red belts that hung almost to their knees. The men were carrying things over to one of the canoe which was sitting at the edge of the water.

Return on Wings of Eagles

By Adam Taylor

Price $13.95

I was jolted awake by the sound of a sudden gasp for air.  I didn’t know where I was or  how I got there.

I gazed around a moment, awaiting that comforting feeling of awareness and comprehension that comes after being suddenly awakened from a deep sleep.

It didn’t come.

I had to relax, I couldn’t panic.  It would make sense shortly.

Breathe, I thought to myself.  Breathe

My chest was stinging with pain, I couldn’t breathe. How come it hurts to breathe?

Something was wrong.

Oh my God, what’s wrong?

I knew the answer wouldn’t be good but I couldn’t remember why.

I cocked my chin slowly upwards and to the right, hoping to catch my affliction out of the corner of my eye, for fear that shock would get the better of me.

I thought about how unnatural it looked.

Two feet of what appeared to be a long flat piece of molded steel was protruding from my left shoulder.

  I felt cold.

At a moment like this, one hopes he can have something inspiring to say or have some words of wisdom from his grandfather to fall back on.  However, the reality and seriousness of the situation began to set in.

“This sucks,” I whispered under my breath.

Then I blacked out.

April Seven

By Jim Cornall
Price $17.95

During the night April awoke. Not a jump out of bed kind of awake, but a hazy, still half-asleep kind of awake. She thought she heard a buzzing noise, and figured that she had left the TV on in the living room. Of course the television hadn’t been on, but in the state of consciousness April was in, logic and order were hardly possible. In the half light, and with one eye open just enough to scan the blurry surroundings, April thought she saw a faint green glow in the corner of the room. As it appeared to be increasing in size and intensity, April firmly blinked in order to be able to see more clearly. The glow was indeed getting bigger and brighter, and it scared April out of any sleepy state she had previously been in. Mia flew from the bed and screeched out of the room as April sat bolt upright in the bed. The hum grew louder as the green light increased to such brilliance that April could see nothing for a moment. With her heart pounding, she screamed as a grey figure stood by the foot of the bed. April struggled to get out of bed, but only backed herself up further against the wall. She screamed again.

April looked at the figure, terrified. Ghosts, she had always been led to believe, were white or transparent, and looked like people. But she didn’t believe in ghosts, and this sure as hell was no ghost. Standing maybe six feet tall, the grey figure had no hair, no noticeable nose, just two nostril like oval holes in the exact centre of the face, large round grey eyes, large ears in the same position as our own but flat to the head, a small mouth with no lips, long arms, very small feet with no toes, and quite a long neck with a hole in the middle. The attire too was grey and very formless, almost like an all-in-one jogging suit with a large belt in the middle, which seemed to have compartments in it. For good measure, April tried to scream again, only this time it came out more as a muffled groan. In addition, April had the distinct feeling that if she opened her mouth, her pounding heart would pop out of it.

Before she could take the time to decide upon any course of action, the thing, for want of a better description, opened its mouth, if you could call it that, and spoke in a deep echoing, resonating voice.

“I know this is hard, but April, do not be afraid, I am here to help you.”

“Help me?” April stuttered, in a hushed and meek voice. “Help me what? Who are you? What are you? How do you know my name?”

By talking and feeling that there maybe wasn’t an immediate threat, April calmed a little.

“Let me explain,” said the creature, trying to sound soothing. “First, what you are seeing in the sky is most definitely real. An object in the sky is approaching your planet at a high speed, and it will collide with your Earth. But it can be avoided. The only thing is April, you are the only one who can see it, so you are going to have to prevent it happening.”

Now April was confused, overwhelmed and still petrified.

“Me, how? I don’t understand. Who are you?”

“My name is Larn, and I am from a planet several Earth light years from yours. We believe all life in the Universe should be protected, and so I am here to help you in your quest to save your planet.”
